Protein is essential for our bodies. We need it for our general health and for muscle growth. But did you know that your body uses amino acids to make protein? There are 20 amino acids—nine of which are essential amino acids. The body cannot make these essential amino acids, so we must get them from a diet rich in foods such as meat, fish, nuts, eggs, dairy, and legumes.
Of these nine essential amino acids, there are three called branched-chain amino acids (so named because of their branched molecular structure), or BCAAs. These are leucine, isoleucine, and valine.
