Exercises with Your Dog

Exercises with Your Dog

You don’t have to work out alone. You can do some great exercises with your dog! Dogs actually make great workout buddies. They have a positive attitude that will help you have fun! Lots of people go jogging with their dogs, but did you know that running with your dog isn’t the only workout that will benefit you and your best friend? Check out these fun workouts you two can do together.

Swimming

Most dogs love the water, and swimming is great for dogs with joint problems, as it provides low-impact exercise. A life jacket can help your dog stay in the water longer for an optimum cardio workout. Swimming is also beneficial for you! Swimming keeps your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress off your body. Plus, it builds endurance, muscle strength, and cardiovascular fitness.

Dog-Friendly Boot Camp

Yes, there are boot camps out there that are made for both people and dogs. If you google “dog-friendly boot camp,” you’ll find several different camps available. These boot camps are a one-stop fitness program that combines a strenuous workout for both you and your dog and even helps teach your pooch basic obedience skills.

Active Fetch

When you play fetch, you throw a ball and your dog races after it. But who says that you should just stand there and watch? While your dog runs after the ball, you could be working out too! Do some jumping jacks or squats as you wait. Better yet, race your dog to the ball and get some sprints in!

Helpful Tips on Exercises with Your Dog

When working out with your dog, please remember these helpful tips:

  • Keep water on hand for both you and your dog.
  • Don’t work out in extreme heat; dogs don’t sweat like we do.
  • Take breaks often for the dog.
  • When the dog is done, the dog is done. Do not push him/her.
