National Wellness Month Reminds Us to Care for Our Bodies

PerformanceInspired BlogPost Wellness Month 1920x1080

While caring for others should be a priority in our lives, we cannot forget that we must also care for ourselves. When we board a plane and listen to the flight attendant give the safety instructions, she tells us that, if we need an oxygen mask, we should put on our own first before we put one on the child or vulnerable person next to us. Why? Because if we don’t take care of ourselves, we may not be physically able to care for someone else.

The same holds true in our daily lives. As anyone who cares for the well-being of someone else knows, to properly care for this person, you must first take care of yourself. That doesn’t mean that you act selfishly or ignore others, but it does mean that you also value and care for yourself. This can be done in an unselfish way, and it’s truly important to our overall health.

That’s why the month of August focuses on self-care. August is National Wellness Month, and it “encourages individuals to make self-care a priority, build healthy routines, and support their mental, physical, and emotional well-being.”

So as we begin August, we want to share some ways you can care for yourself and even offer some PI products to help you along the way.

Make self-care a priority

Take some time to think about how you can relax, how you can decompress, how you can alleviate stress, or how you can do something to make yourself happy. Maybe it’s getting a new haircut, going for a jog, reading a book, listening to your favorite playlist, or going for acupuncture. Regardless of what helps you focus on care for yourself, make sure you take the time each day to do it, even if it’s just 10-15 minutes. Sometimes that’s all you need!

Build healthy routines

Our bodies thrive when we prioritize exercise. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control recommends that adults get “150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week, such as 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week” and “2 days of muscle-strengthening activity each week.” That’s not too difficult, especially knowing that you can break the activity into separate times during the day. Choose an activity you love—playing a sport, walking or jogging, lifting weights, doing some squats, or hitting the gym—and add it to your day. You will feel better both mentally and physically.

Support your mental well-being

Taking care of our mental health is crucial. We are indeed experiencing a “mental health crisis” in the US. In July 2024, Mental Health America wrote that “nearly 60 million adults (23.08%) experienced a mental illness in the past year.”

While serious mental health issues require the help of a professional, those who experience situational stress, anxiety, or occasional sadness or loneliness can take steps to ameliorate these emotions and symptoms. Making friends, joining groups, putting down your phone and enjoying nature, exercising, and more can all improve your mood. Take some time today to reflect on what you need to boost your mental health.

Support your physical well-being

Do this by exercising and by eating healthy foods. Cut carbs and processed foods, add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, and eat whole grains and lean meat. Pay attention to the CDC guidelines mentioned above about exercise and make sure to take time each day to focus on improving your physical health.

Support your emotional well-being

The American Psychiatric Association’s 2024 mental health poll found that “43% of adults say they feel more anxious than they did the previous year,” and the majority of them say that “stress (53%) and sleep (40%) have the biggest impact on their mental health.” To reduce stress, we must not only get the proper amount of sleep each night (seven to nine hours is recommended each night), but we must take steps to reduce stress. Think about what helps you put aside the stressors in your life. Is it a fun night out with friends? A phone conversation with a parent? A nice bath or a date night with your partner? Or maybe it’s watching your favorite comedy. Laughing does wonders for mental health. Taking the time to set aside worries, even for just 20-30 minutes, will help energize you and give you a better perspective.

This month, commit to a new habit—making time each day to do something just for you. And when you’re craving a quick, feel-good treat, try the 5-Minute Protein Brownie Recipe below… because you deserve it!

Quick 5-Minute Protein Brownie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup of Greek yogurt (plain or vanilla, depending on your taste)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp sugar (or your favorite sweetener)
  • 3 ½ Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 4 tsp Performance Whey Protein powder in chocolate flavor (vanilla also works well!)
  • 2 Tbsp of mini chocolate chips (optional)

Mix all of the ingredients together until a smooth batter forms. Lightly grease a microwavable mug (make sure it’s big enough to hold all the batter!). Add the batter to the mug and microwave for 1 ½ minutes. Allow it to cool for a minute or two. Enjoy!
