Dogs make the best workout buddies! Why? Simple: They don’t complain about running up hills and they don’t cancel on you last minute. Dogs are almost always willing to go outside and play! If you’re looking for routines that incorporate your pup, or tips to keep them safe during workouts, you’ve come to the right place.
Walking
One of the first basic workouts you can do with your dog is walking. A brisk walk is ideal for all parties involved. Your benefits include lowered blood pressure, a stronger heart, denser bones, and a lowered risk of depression. And for your dog, regular walks can reduce behavioral problems such as barking, hyperactivity, and pulling on the leash.
Swimming
If you or your dog suffers from arthritis, this is the perfect workout, because it’s a low-impact exercise that is easy on the joints. But, that doesn’t make it a weak workout! Swimming utilizes almost all of your muscle groups, and strengthens your heart and lungs. Unfortunately, not all dogs are fans of the water. But, you can get your dog familiar and comfortable by easing him or her into the shallow end while wearing a flotation vest.
Tug-of-War
Looking for a workout to wear you out? This is the exercise for you! Tug-of-war is a great upper body strength workout, and there’s no doubt your dog will enjoy the playful interaction.
Tips for working out with your furry friend!
Time of Day
Exercise with your pet during the cooler parts of the day, like in the early morning or late evening. Hot pavement can quickly burn your pet’s paws, leaving them blistered and bleeding. Always reach down and touch the pavement before setting out to reduce risk of injury. If you live in a particularly hot area, consider booties to protect your pup’s paws. While you’re out, keep an eye on your dog for signs of overheating. Excessive panting followed by disorientation and noisy breathing means it’s time to head home.
Stay Hydrated
It is very important that you and your dog drink plenty of water to stay properly hydrated! Keep water on hand at all times for you both. Lightweight and collapsible water bowls for dogs can be purchased at a pet store or online.
No dog? No worries!
If you don’t have a dog, but would like to workout with one, you’re in luck! Local animal shelters are always in need of volunteer dog walkers. Most pups in the pound seriously crave attention! Getting them out and active helps the dogs become socialized and well rounded, thus making them more likely to find a forever home.
