Summer is upon us, and the recent heat wave that many of us have been experiencing has only made the season hotter. This sweltering weather can leave us running for the AC and even increase our irritability. But it can also be dangerous for our health if we don’t stay well hydrated.

Case in point, I recently read a story about how nearly a hundred people became sickened by extreme heat while at an outdoor graduation ceremony. Though terrible, this is far from the only story of people succumbing to the effects of high temperatures. The heat can wreak havoc on our bodies. That’s why it’s crucial that we make good decisions when it comes to how much time we spend outside, the energy we exert, and how we cool our bodies.

While it’s a good rule of thumb to drink half your body weight in ounces each day, the weather, your health, and what you drink all factor into that amount.

During these extra hot months, increase your daily water intake and add electrolytes if you’re going to be outside. Try to stay out of the direct sunlight.

If you find it difficult to drink enough water, set a timer as a reminder. Keep a bottle near your workspace and sip throughout the day. And drink a full glass of water before each meal. This should ensure that you get enough water.

Yet we know that it can still be difficult at times to drink all the water we need. We also know that many people think that water is “boring” because it has no taste. So we have a unique way you can add water to your diet while gaining some extra health benefits.

Meet Performance Inspired’s Better Beet Powder—a healthy powder you can add to your water.

But first, let’s explore why beets are so awesome.

The Benefits of Beets

Beets are root vegetables with a distinctive dark red color and that have incredible health benefits. They are rich in folate, which helps with growth, development, and heart health. They contain manganese, which helps with metabolism, the formation of bones, and even brain function. Plus, they contain copper, potassium, magnesium, vitamins C and B6, iron, fiber, and other minerals.

Not many people want to actually eat beets, so they’re often ground into a powder that you can then add to water. The Cleveland Clinic explains that “one teaspoon of beetroot powder is considered the same as a whole beet.”

Beet powder has a wide range of benefits.

  1. Rich in Nitrate

Beet powder is rich in nitrate—a nitrogen and oxygen compound that when mixed with our saliva is converted into nitric oxide, which relaxes and expands the blood vessels. This then allows for increased blood flow and allows more oxygen to circulate through your body.

Healthline explains, “The nitrates in beets may improve brain function by promoting the dilation of blood vessels and thus increasing blood flow to the brain. Particularly, beets have been shown to improve blood flow to the frontal lobe of the brain, an area associated with higher level thinking like decision making and working memory.”

  1. Increases Stamina

Studies have also shown that beet powder helps increase stamina. In these studies, “athletes were able to ride exercise bikes longer at higher intensity levels after just six days of drinking beetroot juice” and “walking up steep hills became easier with less overall energy burned after participants took a beetroot supplement. Recovery time was faster, too.”

  1. Helps Reduce Inflammation

Beet powder can also help fight inflammation, as it contains antioxidants. Antioxidants are nutrients that can help prevent damage to cells caused by free radicals.

  1. May Help Gut Health

Medical News Today explains that beet powder may help improve gut health, as it contains “bioactive compounds that may improve gastrointestinal health, modulate gut microbiota, and stimulate the metabolism and growth of probiotics.”

  1. May Lower Blood Pressure

Because it contains more potassium than a banana, beet powder may help improve heart health and lower blood pressure. However, doctors warn that if you already have low blood pressure, it may be detrimental to take beet powder, as it could lower your BP further.

As always, it’s important to talk with your doctor before starting any supplement, as it may interact with other meds you are currently taking or any underlying conditions. For example, because beet powder is high in oxalates, it may contribute to the formation of kidney stones. So, if you are prone to kidney stones, you should probably stay away from beet powder.
